Significant Automotive Technologies from Pontiac
In its entire period of existence, Pontiac introduced numerous new technologies for its vehicles. However, most of them were patented by General Motors and shared by other GM Divisions like Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC.
The first technological benchmark that Pontiac achieved was to create and use V8 engine in production cars. The company began working on V8 configuration in 1946, which was finally brought to production in 1955, while a high-performance version of Pontiac V8 engine was introduced in the very next year.
The main engine technologies included GM Small-Block V8 engines, GM EcoTec four-cylinder engines and GM High-Value V6 engines. Besides, Pontiac also borrowed several Toyota ZZ engines from New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., which was a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota Motor Corporation.
Other than engines, Pontiac vehicles also derived gearbox technologies from their specialized manufacturers. For example, it employed 6L80 and 5-L40E transmission systems that were developed by General Motors, and TR-6060 transmission system that was produced by TREMEC.
